To the family and friends of the great Ed Bernat:

I had the privilege and high honor of meeting Ed when my father was a patient on the 4th floor of the VA several years ago. My father was in a room across from Ed and later joined his childhood friend, Joe Lesniewski, as his room mate. Ed was a humble, but engaging man who shared his heroism as "just doing his job."

My deepest sympathy goes to his children and family survivors. Being acquainted with Ed is a highlight in my humble existence. Rest in Peace, sir!

My heart goes out to all of you, and I wish that I could be with you for the Memorial Service . I think the one thing that I remember and miss most about Uncle Eddie is his terrific sense of humor. Though we didn't see him and Aunt Rosie as often as we would have liked, those times were so happy and filled with laughter. He and Dick were both filled with jokes and stories and each one led to another ! I am sure they are both enjoying entertaining the rest of the family now.
God be with you and comfort you in this difficult time. Remembering the wonderful times you all had with your Dad can help to ease the pain you are going thru now. God Bless you all. Love, ' cousin' Mary Henderson

Dearest Kathy, Steve, Anthony and Eddie and families,
My Uncle Eddie and Aunt Rosie were always so kind to me and our Urbancic family and we had so much fun together. I recall fondly the days in Kane and Sheffield when your family would visit us - especially when dad and mom were the proprietors of the Sheffield Tavern and Hotel! Aunt Rosie helped mom in the kitchen preparing all the food for the hunters during deer season and Uncle Eddie and dad had fun talking with the deer hunters as they returned to the Tavern with their stories!
When my sister, Norma Jean passed away suddenly at the age of 18 in 1957 Uncle Eddie and Aunt Rosie were a great comfort to our family.
I remember the times when I was just a teenager and spent summer vacations with Uncle Eddie and Aunt Rosie in Erie. Uncle Eddie was employed then at GE and we would hear the whistle blowing and our hearts were joyful because we know that he was coming home!
Later, when our family relocated in Baltimore, Maryland, Uncle Eddie and Aunt Rosie were present for my wedding to Hank and Uncle Eddie was the Best Man for my brother, Don on August 17, 1963.
What HAPPY TIMES we had together!
I love you, Uncle Eddie, and I will miss sending you notes to the VA Hospital. I know that you are in heaven and I am happy that you are at peace with our Lord.
Thank you for all the beautiful memories! You are our hero and dearest Uncle.
I love you!

Dad, I miss you already but I know each hunting season you will be sitting next to me and reminding me about our little "1 bullet" joke.

Tony ~

He will ALWAYS be with you. I worked at the Erie VA and met your Father one day outside the 2nd Floor entrance. I stopped to talk to him and the military came up, but when I heard "Easy Company" my jaw dropped (as I am prior service Army). His stories were not stories, but history. I was sad when we had to move (my husband is still active duty Army) this past October it was hard to leave all those Soldiers. I was just there visiting in March as my Father was on Ed's floor. I stopped to say "hello" each day, even if it were just for a few; him and Vinnie touched my heart to no end. I wish I was just a couple hours closer, so I could come up this Saturday for the Memorial Service. He may not be able to answer you anymore here on Earth, but he can certainly still hear you.

I met Mr. Bernat when my Grandfather moved into the VA. He lived there for a year, and each time that we visited him, we always made it a point to visit Mr. Bernat before leaving. My Grandfather had suffered a debilitating stroke and was unable to communicate, so visiting with Mr. Bernat gave me some of what I didn't have with my grandfather during our visits. Mr. Bernat had such a fun personality that even after my Grandfather passed, we continued to visit him at the VA, and I wrote him letters often over the past five years. He was a good friend, and I'm honored to have had the opportunity to have met him and to have shared a friendship with him. My thoughts are with him and his family during this time.

Tony & Family: I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. Our Acting Medical Center Director at the VA called me to tell me that your Dad had passed. He was a celebrity at the VA and truly one of our nation's heroes. I read his obit today and chuckled when I read about his sense of humor. That's obviously where you get yours from. My sincerest sympathy to you and your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. It's comforting to know that your Dad is reunited with your Mom.

Grampa,

I am truly honored to be your Grandson. The fun times we had growing up are priceless. Whether it was me taking apart the kitchen table while Grams was sewing or in the garden with you. I miss you greatly. I cannot be there to say good bye but this nation needs protectors like us. Edward Bernat I have the watch, to watch over and protect this nation, our family, and friends. Give Rose a hug for me for I will miss you two very much.

Adam Bernat ~

It was an honor knowing your Grandfather. I worked at the Erie VA and met him one day outside. My hearing is not the best from the military myself (Army) and then I heard him say "...Easy Company" and I had him repeat what he said. I sat on the bench (outside the second floor entrance) and we talked for who knows how long. I wish I could be there for the 11 JUN service at 1530, but we are stationed at Arlington National Cemetery. Where are you located? Thank you for your service. I will never forget Ed, and will see him again. My condolences to you and your family. He is reunited with both his wife and those of Easy Company who have parted ways with life here on Earth.

Adam, your Grandpa was so proud of you. I don't think a day went by that he didn't talk about you. What a special bond you had with Grandma and Grandpa. A wonderful lifetime memory.
Much love, Aunt Kathy and Uncle Gary
