Michael R. Schillinger

Michael R. "Mike" Schillinger, 71 of Girard, passed away on Friday October 7, 2016 at St. Vincent Health Center.

He was born in Erie, May 30, 1945 a son of the late Francis and Beth (Niver) (Schillinger) Rea

Mike graduated from Youngsville High School in 1963. Following high school he enlisted in the US Army Reserves where he served four years of military service. He began working as a meat cutter in high school at the Red & White Grocery store in Youngsville. He opened his own business Mike’s Meats in Youngsville, later working for The Golden Dawn in Girard. He also worked for Girard School District in the Maintenance Department and Grettler’s Meats in Girard. Most recently he opened Mike’s Meats in Girard.

He was a member of the Girard American Legion Post#494 where he was 1st and 2nd Vice Commander and elected Commander of the Post in 2001. He and his wife Joyce managed the Bingo games there for many years, and organized the American Legion Dan Rice Days Parade for several years. He was also a member of the Edinboro-McKean VFW Post #740. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bingo, spending time at Presque Isle with his family, karaoke at the Fairview American Legion. He loved telling Jokes wherever he went. Mike was a longtime and avid Cleveland Browns and Indians fan.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step father, Benjamin Rea.

Mike will be greatly missed by his family, which include his wife, Joyce (Gearhart) Schillinger, whom he married January 8, 1972 in Erie; a daughter, Jillian M. Evanoff (David); a son, Major Francis J. "Jake" Schillinger (Stephanie); his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kasey, Tyson, Maddison, and Trenton; a sister, Mary Jo Schillinger; two brothers, Mark Schillinger (Terri) and Peter Schillinger (Jackie) ; his mother in law, Lillian Gearhart; step sister, Judy Rea and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2-4pm AND 6-8pm on Tuesday at Edder Funeral Home, Inc. 309 Main St. East, Girard and are invited to the Girard American Legion on Wednesday 12 noon to attend a Time of Remembrance and Luncheon followed by Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Mike Schillinger Memorial Fund C/O Edder Funeral Home.
