Thomas Preston Weldon 72, of West Springfield, passed away on Sunday November 24, 2024
He was born October 3, 1952, the son of the late Howard P. and Mary E. (Hall) Weldon
Tom lived his life on the family farm in West Springfield and like many farm kids, he grew up working on the land. After graduating in 1970 from Northwestern High School, he began farming full-time. He worked side by side with his father Howard Weldon and as the years went by, he took over the management of the land, growing produce such as sweet corn, tomatoes, and strawberries as well as raising beef cattle.
Like generations of his family, Tom was a lifetime farmer. He was a hard-working, simple man, who lived a life of self-sufficiently, and was surrounded by friends and family who loved him. He was the kind of man who was always happy to lend a hand when a neighbor needed help.
The woods behind the farm were his sanctuary-a block of forest he carefully managed and tended throughout the year. He spent many peaceful hours working in the woods, clearing sections and building a small fire to keep him company. Tom never let nature go to waste, whether on the farm or in the forest. He constructed and repaired farm buildings and even built his first home using timber from his cherished land.
In recent years, he was rarely seen without a dog by his side. In his younger days he was an avid trapper. Tom was a successful, lifelong hunter. On the first day of deer season, he could be found in a "special" tree stand. The gun he relied on was nothing but a lever-action rifle.
A dedicated community member, Tom was a life member and past president of the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department and proudly served 50 years as a Pennsylvania Forest Fire Warden.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Lynette Ingold and Bonnie Soltis; a true friend, Charlie Harrington; and his longtime companion, Vivian Rhoades.
He will be greatly missed by his family which includes his sons, Luke Weldon (Julie) and Jeff Weldon; sisters Patty Weldon and Sally Weldon; grandchildren, Brad Weldon, Beth Weldon, and Tylee Weldon as well as many nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Tom's memory to the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department, 11959 Main Street, East Springfield, PA 16411.
