Thomas Chuzie Obituary

Thomas G. Chuzie, beloved husband, father, brother, and Papa, left this earth and peacefully entered his eternal rest on June 5, 2025.

Tom was born in Uniontown, PA, a son of the late George and Elizabeth (Bencze) Chuzie.  He and his family moved to Girard at an early age where he graduated from Rice Avenue Union High School in 1964.  He continued his education at Slippery Rock College, attaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1969.  Tom taught for a few years before transferring out of education and into manufacturing.  He worked at American Sterilizer as a senior buyer for many years.  Tom then worked for twenty years at Copes-Vulcan, where he eventually retired following a job well done.

Tom provided for his family and cared deeply about spending quality time with his children, proudly participating in all of their activities.  He was involved with coaching during their youth and continued thereafter in a leadership position within the booster programs for many high school teams.  Grandchildren and sporting events were a must-see, as Tom and his wife, Sarah, attended every event they could, cheering in delight with a welcoming hug waiting at the end of each game, win or lose.  In addition to his own family’s sports, Pittsburgh-based teams were also a must watch throughout all seasons.  Along with Tom’s influence in sports, he was a member of the Girard Borough Council, acting as president for a time.  His time away from Girard was enjoyed at his family’s camp in Pittsfield, often joined by his Uncles, family, and dear friends.  The stories flowed effortlessly whenever everyone gathered together.  Tom was also an avid fisherman and hunter.  He could be found along the local streams or in the woods doing what he loved.  Tom had a true passion for golf, although, according to him, he never played “up to par,” except on the 19th hole.  One of his most proud moments was a hole-in-one at the Venango Golf Course.  When not at a sporting event, along a stream, in the woods, or on the golf course, Tom enjoyed his Monday evening bingo at the Girard American Legion.  Tom was also a long-time member of St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church as well as St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.  He was a man of strong faith who believed that God had a plan for him, in which Tom trusted His way and His timing.

Tom will be greatly missed by his family, which includes his beloved wife Sarah (Albert) Chuzie, whom he married on June 29, 1968 and lovingly called “Sadie”; daughters, Amy Beth Smith (Rob), Trisha Snook (Aron); son, Douglas Chuzie (Nicolle); sisters, Terrie Sargent (Butch), Susan Benton (David); brothers-in-law, Bill Albert, Bob Albert (Debbie), and Jeff Chapman; grandsons, Justin Smith, Jacob Smith, Caleb Snook, Landon Snook, Nolan Snook, and Valentino Chuzie, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
