Tammy L. Hayes, 57, of Fairview, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at the Cleveland Clinic following a brief illness.
She was born on November 1, 1964, in Erie, a daughter of Donald Montgomery and Patricia (Shilling).
Tammy grew up in Erie and graduated from Academy High School in 1983. Following high school, she graduated from Mercyhurst University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She furthered her education at Edinboro University, where she received a Master’s of Education degree in Reading.
She began her professional employment at the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit in Edinboro, where she was a reading specialist for many years and was currently employed there. Tammy’s passion was teaching students how to read.
She attended St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Erie, was the Director at Compass Reading Center on Old Zuck Road, and a member of the International Dyslexia Association. She loved camping and vacationing with her family to New York City, Outer Banks, Disney, and Amish country in Ohio and PA.
In addition to her father, Donald L. Montgomery, she was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Thompson.
She will be greatly missed by her family, which include her husband, Adam L. Hayes, whom she married on December 9, 1994; her daughter, Krista N. Hayes; her son, Joseph L. Hayes; her mother and step-father, Harry and Patricia Shelander; her twin sister, Tina A. Edwards; a niece and nephew, Kaitlyn A. Kelly (Tyler) and Kyle R. Edwards and many other nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2PM to 4PM and 6PM to the time of a brief prayer service at 8PM at Edder Funeral Home Inc., 309 Main St. East, Girard.
