Shirley Ruth Fischer was born on March 8, 1949 and died peacefully at her home on April 1, 2022, surrounded by her family, following a recent illness.
Shirley graduated from St. Benedict Academy and enjoyed a long career in patient accounting at UPMC Hamot.
Shirley enjoyed spending quality time with her family, keeping up with current events, and playing bingo with fellow residents of her apartment complex. Shirley loved animals and they loved her in return. At every gathering, Shirley was surrounded by a host of family pets who sat patiently near her, knowing that she would be sure to share her meal with them. She was especially fond of and rescued a number of cats throughout her life, providing each with a loving and caring home. Later in life, Shirley served as a volunteer with Orphan Angels Cat Sanctuary and Adoption Center.
Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Robert Custer and her brother, James Murphy.
She is survived by her mother, Eileen Custer, her siblings, Joseph, Lorne and Mary Custer, her daughters Amy Adamus (Dan) and Carrie Kamholz (Gerald), her grandchildren Matthew, Danielle, Bradley, Alex, Katy, and Eric, as well as her great granddaughter Leona, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Shirley’s final arrangements are being handled privately on behalf of her family by the Edder Funeral Home. Her family will be hosting a celebration of her life later this year.
Shirley’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the UPMC Emergency Department, MICU Staff and Hospice Team, for the quality care and comfort they provided to Shirley, in her final days.
