Sheila Fiscus Obituary

Sheila B. (Himes) Fiscus, 79, died at Fairview Manor on Thursday, February 25.
  She was born on March 15, 1941 to the late H. Robert and Joanna (Quinn) Himes in Brookville. Sheila graduated from Mercyhurst College in 1963 with a B.A. in English. She began teaching in Cleveland at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, then returned to Erie and taught at East High School.   Following the birth of her children, she was a homemaker for many years. Sheila also served as the librarian and a board member at the Lake City Library. In 1988, she started a career at Penn State Behrend as an Adjunct Instructor in English. She taught for many years in the Erie Catholic School System and was the librarian at Our Lady of Peace School.  In 1995, she returned to college, receiving her M.A. in English at Gannon University.  In 2003, she resigned from Penn State Behrend.  She continued teaching as a substitute teacher for the Girard School District, ending her career at Elk Valley Elementary School. Sheila was also an author and an editor; she published two books of poetry.
  Sheila was a scout leader and PTO president. She was politically active through regular correspondence with local representatives and volunteer campaign work. In 2006, Sheila traveled to Yellowstone National Park, working at the Old Faithful General Store for a summer. She enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s events and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan. Sheila loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Bernard "Bern" Fiscus; two sisters, Eugenia Alaimo and Joanna Spazzarini.
She will be greatly missed by her family which includes two daughters, Joanna Fiscus and Elizabeth Mathur (Dev); two sons, Augustine "Aug" Fiscus and John Fiscus (Sarah); two sisters, Dorothy O'Connell and Sister Mary Andrew Himes; two brothers, Michael Himes and Reverend Robert Himes; six grandchildren, Zak Fiscus, Kevin Dunn, Samantha Dunn, Peter Rayburg, Kellett Fiscus and Veda Mathur; former husband, Bernard Fiscus; as well as several nieces and nephews.
  A celebration of Sheila’s life will be scheduled at a later date.
