Roy W. McDonald, 92, of Cranesville, passed away, surrounded by his family, on Friday, February 10, 2023, at Pleasant Ridge Manor.
He was born in Everett, PA (Bedford County) on June 14, 1930, a son of the late John C. and Olive (Showalter) McDonald.
Roy was raised and educated in the Everett area and as a young man enlisted in the U.S.Army during the Korean Conflict. He was deployed to Korea with the 8206th Port Operations Detachment. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, the Occupation Medal with Japan, the Good Conduct Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his military service, he returned to the Girard area and began working at Lake Erie Foundry. He later worked for Endean Industries in Albion where he retired from in 1992. He also had worked as a Greyhound Bus Driver in the mid 1950's and following retirement worked security at the Girard Area Industrial Development Corp.
He was a member of the Girard American Legion Post #494 and enjoyed hunting with his brothers, and playing Thursday night Horseshoes with family and friends at the Schaaf Farm.
Roy is survived by six daughters, Bonnie Aranyos (Andrew), Sharon L. Olesnanik (Mark), Roxanne J. Allen (Craig), Terri L. Holmes (Charles), Darlene K. Smith and Paula Earley; a son, John S. McDonald (Belinda); sisters, Iola Lawrence, Esther Rae, Eleanor Steinle (Charles), Methel McDonald-Bell, and Wanda Black; brothers, Lewis McDonald, John "Jr" McDonald (Gail), Guy McDonald (Mary), Percy McDonald (Norma); 16 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Doris L. (Stifler) McDonald, whom he married, December 29, 1956, in Girard; sisters, Evelyn Carr, and Norma Sanders Scalise; two brothers, Bernard McDonald and Delmas McDonald; a great granddaughter, McKenzie Rose Allen.
Visitation will be held at Edder Funeral Home Inc., 309 Main St. East, Girard on Tuesday from 2PM to 4PM and 6PM to 8 PM. Services will be held there on Wednesday at 10 AM with Rev. Debbie Rimmer officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be in the Hope Cemetery .
