Roena Hough Obituary

Roena C. (Leehan) Alward Hough, 80 of Girard, died Saturday, December 12, 2020 at St. Vincent Health Center.
She was born April 24, 1940 in Albion, a daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Borcz) Leehan.
Roena graduated from Conneaut Valley High School in 1958. Following high school, she worked at the Rice Avenue Dry Cleaners in Girard, as a seamstress.  She continued this skill  through her life by altering her families clothing as needed. She spent many years at home taking care of her family and children. During this time she baked beautiful birthday and wedding cakes to help supplement the families income.  As her family got older, she decided to return to work and was employed at Marx Toy’s in Girard as an assembler. She had most recently worked for Pleasant Ridge Manor, where for twenty-two years was a nurse’s aide, retiring in 2002.
During retirement she traveled with her husband Vern overseas and to see her step-children, with her son Ted and his wife Doreen to many places in the USA and with her daughter Sue, granddaughter Sarah and friend Kim to Chicago and other places.
She was very proud of all her children and always put family first. The holidays whether it be Easter, Thanksgiving or especially Christmas, meant the world to her because that is when family came together.  She was a strong, compassionate woman who spoke her mind.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Girard where she was a Eucharistic Minister. She loved spending time in her flower garden, going to movies, lunch and playing bingo. She always enjoyed Saturday evening dinners with her lady friends.
In addition to her parents, Roena was preceded in death by her first husband, Theodore E. Alward in 1993 and her second husband, Vernon G. Hough in 2014 and a brother, James Edward Leehan.
She will be greatly missed by her family, which include her daughter, Sue Vanicek (Bob); two sons, Ted Alward (Doreen) and Mark Alward; a sister, Thelma Smith (Don); her grandchildren, Sarah Vanicek, Jake Alward (Mikaela Billings), twins, Megan and Morgan Alward, step- daughter Cheryl Polenick and step-son Dale Hough (Lori), step-grandchildren Melissa and Ryan along with several nieces and nephews.
Roena will be remembered for her beautiful smile, generous heart, kind soul, flower gardens and her famous macaroni salad. She loved all her grandchildren and supported each one in whatever endeavor they pursued. She could not have been prouder of them. She has touched all our hearts and will never be forgotten.
Services will be held privately due to Covid-19.
Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Crossingville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the A.F. Dobler Hose Co., 37 Walnut St., Girard, PA 16417 or the Erie Humane Society, 2407 Zimmerly Road, Erie, PA 16506.
