Richard Cyener Boyle
Dr. Richard Boyle was born on January 26, 1929, in Buffalo, NY and passed away on January 6, 2023, at the age of 93. He is the son of the late George and Madeleine Boyle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Pat, and his son, Robert.
He is survived by his beloved wife of ten years, Dorothy Benacci Welsh Spitzer.
He is also survived by his sister Marnie Schrader; children Casey Hoffman (Keith), Tracy Kulik (Rich), Trish Wampler (Doug), and Sean Boyle (Donna); daughter-in-law Kim Boyle; as well as Tad Welsh, Tim Welsh (Ann-Marie), Jon Welsh (Gina), Kim Barringer (Scott) and Jake Welsh (Debi); and his sister-in-law, Gerri Marino, and brother-in-law Joseph Benacci (Berit). There are seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews surviving Dr. Boyle.
Dick graduated from Columbia University in 1951 and spent three years serving as an Operations Officer aboard the USS Edisto (AGB-2, a wind class icebreaker), supporting Arctic and Antarctic exploration and construction of radar stations in the far North. He was in the Navy during the Korean War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He married Patricia Behre in 1954 and graduated from the University of Buffalo Medical School in 1958. He moved to Erie, PA, for his internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He then joined a family medical practice in Lake City, PA in 1960 where he practiced with Dr. Richard Rahner. He then headed a family practice at Elk Valley Medical Center in Girard. He served the community until his retirement. Dick was an active member of St. John’s Parish in Girard and was a Fourth- Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He continued to serve others as a Doctor at the St. Paul’s Free Clinic in Erie, the Knights of Columbus, St. John’s and through many volunteer efforts.
A memorial service is being planned. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1001 Main St. East, Girard, PA 16417 or to the Gertrude A. Barber Foundation, 100 Barber Place, Erie, PA 16507.
