Nancy Mae (Walter) Downey passed away on February 7, 2025, at UPMC Hamot, reuniting with her beloved husband, Harold “Tink” Downey. Born to Harvey and Juanita (Rosencrans) Walter, she spent her life in Fairview, PA, growing up on her family’s farm before moving near the original Fairview High School.
A 1948 graduate of Fairview High, Nancy studied bookkeeping at Erie Commercial and Erie Business Colleges. She worked as a bookkeeper for her father’s dealership, Fairview Garage, later Fairview Chrysler Plymouth, where she and Tink eventually took over and built a successful career. She was a known and trusted authority on finance and state regulations in the auto industry.
Nancy was a devoted member of Luther Memorial Church, Zonta Club, and the Albion Order of the Eastern Star. She was a determined and stylish woman, deeply engaged in her community, and instrumental in bringing kindergarten to the Fairview School District. She and Tink shared a love for travel, from Chrysler-won trips to motorhome adventures across New England, the South, and Canada. They cherished time with their wide circle of friends, often over a game of euchre.
A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Ruth Duberow (Paul), Hugh Walter, and Lewis Walter; her husband, Harold (1928-2019); and her daughter, Lavanda Shaaf (1953-2013).
Nancy is survived by her children, John H. Downey of Fairview, Annette M. Pratt (Anthony) of Pittsburgh, and Harvey E. Downey (Louise) Fairview; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Nancy will be remembered for her strength, loyalty, feistiness, and most of all, her unwavering love for her family. A private family service will be held in May. Memorial donations may be made to the Fairview Fire Department and the Albion Order of the Eastern Star.
