LeRoy Phelps Obituary

LeRoy G. Phelps, 92, of Girard, died on Sunday, March 6, 2022, at St. Vincent Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born August 5, 1929, in Williamsfield, OH, a son of the late John and Cora (Spellman) Phelps.

LeRoy moved to Girard as a young man and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 145th Infantry Regiment at Camp Polk, LA as a Sergeant from 1949 to 1952.

Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Girard and began work at Bay City Forge in Erie, where he worked for many years. While employed there he also worked for Mann Coal in Girard on the weekends and evenings. At the time Bay City closed, he began working for Ferraro Ford in Girard and also Erie. He drove truck for PHB Die Cast and was a security guard for the Girard Area Industrial Development Corporation to the age of 82.

LeRoy regularly worked two or three jobs. He helped during the harvest at Wiser Farms. He was well known in the area as a part time policeman for Girard Borough under Chief Joe Antolik and was often seen at the Girard Area Schools events for security. At the time of his death, he was working for Suellen's Upholstery in Girard.

He was a member of the Girard Presbyterian Church; a life member of A.F. Dobler Hose Co.; the Girard American Legion Post #494 and in his retirement, years mowed grass for the Girard Cemetery. He enjoyed woodworking, building bird feeders, bird houses and lawn ornaments for friends and family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Clairbell McMillen and brothers, Howard, Ellsworth “John”, Delos, Donovan and Hallie Phelps.

He will be greatly missed by his family, which include his wife, Myrtle M. (Killian) Phelps, whom he met as an usher at the Denman Theater in Girard. The couple were married September 22, 1951; his daughters, Dr. Lisa A. Watson (William) of Conneaut, OH, Lori A. Phelps of Baltimore, MD; step grandson, Bud J. Watson (Rebecca); great grandchildren, Levi and Caroline; his extended family, Shawn Logan, April Bailey (Philip) and Christopher Scott also many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Thursday from 5PM to 8 PM at Edder Funeral Home Inc., 309 Main St. East, Girard and attend services there on Friday at 10 AM with Rev. Nicola Vitiello officiating.

Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery, with full military honors.
