Joyce A. (Vashaw) Sargent, 91, of Lake City, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
Joyce was born on June 17, 1933, in Sheffield, PA, to the late Page Vashaw and Muriel (Geer) Vashaw Zandi. She grew up in Sheffield, graduating from Sheffield High School, and went on to study at Erie Commercial College. Joyce worked in the Medical Records Department at Hamot Hospital as a typist and later served as a secretary for 20 years at Autoclave Engineers, Inc. (now Parker Hannifin).
Joyce was a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church in Lake City and, in her later years, attended East Springfield Federated Church with her daughter. She also gave her time generously to local scouting, serving as a Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack #44 and assisting with Girl Scouts.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Donald J. Sargent, whom she married on July 17, 1954. She was also predeceased by her stepfather, Leo Zandi; stepmother, Ruth Vashaw; stepsisters, Rebecca Copley and Beverly Landers; and brothers-in-law Ross (Emma Jean) Sargent, Keith (Elva) Sargent, Robert (Ruth) Sargent, and Richard R. Sargent (KIA in WWII).
Joyce will be deeply missed by her family, including her daughters, Eileen D. Sargent and her husband Darrell Hawk of Shawnee, KS, and Pamela J. Thornton of Girard; her son, Edward P. Sargent of Erie; her brother, Rodney P. Vashaw of Apex, NC; and her son-in-law, Robert Buman of Lake City. She also leaves behind her stepbrothers, Richard Zandi and Bob Bunting (Laura) of Sheffield, PA; her grandchildren, Freyja, Brett, Lorena, Amelia, and Katherine; her godchild, Holly (Rathbun) DeMaranville; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Sunday, November 17, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Edder Funeral Home, Girard. A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 18, at 10 a.m. at the Federated Church of East Springfield, with burial following at Girard Cemetery.
