John G. Klier, 91, passed away on Wednesday March 2, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family after a period of declining health.
John was born June 10, 1930 in Erie, PA a son of the late Joseph M. and Thecla (Nies) Klier. He moved to Fairview with his parents in 1931. After graduating from Fairview High School in 1948, he began farming with his father growing vegetables with a special interest in growing tomatoes. He became a member of the Erie County Farmers Association as well as the Pennsylvania Farmers Association. For the next ten years he went on to become a field reporter for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1959, John was elected Fairview Township Supervisor and continued to be re-elected until his retirement in 1989. After his retirement, he continued to serve on the Fairview Township Planning Commission. John was also asked to serve as chairman of the consolidation committee during the merger of the Fairview Borough and Fairview Township governments.
John and his wife Helen were one of the founding families of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Fairview where he served on the original founding committee, and also served a number of years on church council. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and sang in the Resurrection Choir. John was also a life member of the Knights of Columbus, 5430 Council and a former member of the Erie Maennerchor Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Rand, Mary Therese Teske and Jeanne Marie (in infancy).
John will be deeply missed by his wife, Helen (Hrinda) Klier, whom he married on February 20, 1954 at St John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Girard, PA; his daughters, Denise Krainski (Edmund) of Fairview, PA , Suzanne Mills (James) of Cranesville, PA and Jane Patterson (Douglas) of Centerville, OH; four grandchildren, Lauren Krainski (Jeff Kranking) of Seattle, WA, Jackie Morris (Andrew) of Lorton, VA, Dr. John D. Patterson, Ph.D. of State College, PA and Dr. Jenna M. Patterson, M.D. of Columbus, OH; great-grandchildren, Camilla Kranking and Mason Morris; as well as several nieces and nephews.
His family wishes to thank the Lakeland Area Hospice as well as his caregivers, Debbie P., Amy, Tarra, and Debbie S.
Friends may call on Monday March 7, 2022 at Holy Cross Church 7100 W Ridge Rd, Fairview, PA 16415 from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. A Funeral Mass will be held there the following day, Tuesday, at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery.
