Geraldine L. (Cassell) Wheeler, 88, of Fairview, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at St. Mary's at Asbury Ridge.
She was born on July 28, 1936, a daughter of the late Richard and Dorothy (Lewis) Cassell.
Geraldine grew up on the County Home Farm, immersing herself in farm life alongside her family. Her deepest affection was reserved for showing her cherished quarter horse, Lucky, in the Erie County area, with whom she would steal away whenever possible. After graduating from Fairview High School in 1954, Geraldine established a salon, dedicating over 45 years to serving her loyal customers. During that time she embarked on the journey of building a family with her husband, Bud. Her young daughter often lent a hand, assisting with unraveling curlers and tying hair ribbons. Despite her bustling shop and busy children, she always maintained an impeccable sense of style.
In addition to her other roles, Geraldine also tended to the farm animals, most notably Belgian Draft Horses, as well as cattle, chickens, rabbits, and even two pet raccoons. The children delighted in wagon and cart rides pulled by these majestic horses. For many years, alongside her husband, they were active 4-H leaders, while making everlasting friendships. Each year, their friends generously lent a hand during the hay-baling process, all while enjoying the homemade "Ginger drinks," a cherished family recipe.
Her large garden not only provided for her own family but also for neighboring children who were well-fed, often seeking refuge within her welcoming home. With each bountiful harvest, dedicated days were set aside for canning and preserving fruits and vegetables, filling hundreds of jars. Eventually, a motor was added to their grinder to streamline the process. Geraldine frequently played the role of a gracious host, organizing memorable gatherings for her family and friends. She and her husband believed in showing their children the world, embarking on summer vacations that involved traveling and camping. Finally, in their long-awaited retirement, they purchased a fifth-wheel trailer and set out on remarkable adventures. She was a longtime member of the Lake City Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Bud" Wheeler, whom she married on October 28, 1961; brother, Gerald Cassell; and her great-granddaughter, Vahida Jasarevic.
She will be greatly missed by her three wonderful children, Dorine M. (Wheeler) Biggie (Ronald), Bradley D. Wheeler (Barbara), and Kevin R. Wheeler (Lori); her sister, Patricia Brown (David); her brother, David Cassell (Toni); five grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua, Faith (Camden), Emiley and Lydia; four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Penelope, Christopher, Natalya and Theo; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Thursday, October 24th from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. at Edder Funeral Home, Girard. A funeral service will be held at Lake City Presbyterian Church on Friday, October 25th at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Geraldine's name may be made to Hope on Horseback, 10370 Barton Rd, Waterford, PA 16441.
