Gary L. Schell, 79, of Girard, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Manchester Commons following an extended illness.
He was born on July 10, 1944, in Red Lion, PA (York County), a son of the late Lewis and Florence (Beshore) Schell.
Gary graduated from Red Lion High School in 1961 and enlisted in the US Navy in July of that year. He served with Mobile Construction Battalion One, in Antarctica, Morocco, Nigeria, and Guantanamo Bay.
He enjoyed kayaking, golfing, beekeeping and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State Football fan.
Gary will be remembered for his quick wit, contagious smile, and his willingness to always offer a helping hand.
He was employed at Verizon for over 40 years as a Network Engineer and most recently for Lutheran Social Services at Martin’s Landing in Girard. Gary deeply cherished all the friendships he made there.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania Beekeeping Association and the Navy Seabees Club.
Gary will be deeply missed by his loving wife and best friend, Betsy Schell, sons, Bradley and Michael Schell and a daughter, Amy Webber (Brian), Sisters, Etta and Gail Stump; grandchildren, Korey Webber and Stephanie Rupp; mother-in-law, Rita Donikowski; brother-in-law, Michael Donikowski (Tina); sister-in -law, Mary Jo Jordano (Jim); nephews, Joseph and Thomas Donikowski and his cat, “Simon.”
Interment will be at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
