Evelyn May Baker, 94, of West Springfield, died on Monday, January 8, 2024, at LECOM Senior Living.
She was born on August 5, 1929, in Girard, a daughter of the late Florence Edna (Olmstead) and Raymond A. Bovee.
She lived in Longview, Washington near Mt. St. Helens for a time, prior to her returning to the area. She graduated in 1947 from Kelso High School in Kelso, Washington. During WWII she worked in the Radiology Department at Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut, Ohio. She also worked at Longview Memorial Hospital. Later she retired from West County Communications Center as an EMT Dispatcher for the fire and police departments after twelve years of service, retiring at age 62.
Evelyn was a well-known West County community historian, with her articles appearing on the PA Genealogy website. She also was a ham radio operator with the call sign W3JQV. Evelyn attended the West Springfield United Methodist Church where she was active in the Naomi Circle and helped at the rummage sales. She also assisted at the West Springfield Fire Department carnivals for many years. She enjoyed working in the yard and riding her John Deere tractor, working on the computer, crocheting and always had lots of friends and family stopping by to visit.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Samuel E. Baker Sr.; her son, Samuel E. "Buster" Baker Jr.; and brothers Fred Bovee and Raymond A. Bovee Jr.
She will be greatly missed by her family which include her three sisters, Joanne Regal (Fred), Beverly Ulbrich (Jim) all of Erie and Mary Hill (Harry) of Delaware; grandchildren, Matthew Rea (Susan) of Edinboro, Mark Rea (Catherine) of Townville, Michael Baker (Lorraine), Christopher Baker (Brittany), Sam Baker (Kim) and Candy Baker all of Columbus, Ohio, a daughter, Bonnie Martin (Charles); as well as many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Springfield Fire Department, 11959 Main Street, East Springfield, PA 16411 .
Family and friends may call on Thursday, January 11, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Edder Funeral Home Inc. 309 Main St. E. Girard. A Funeral Service will be held there the following day, Friday at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Springfield Cemetery.
