Eugene “Gene” Sorrentino, 79, of Girard, died at UPMC Hamot Hospital on Monday October 25, 2021.
Gene was born March 12, 1942 a son to the late Joseph and Josephine (Juliano) Sorrentino.
Gene attended school at St. Paul’s Catholic Church as well as McDowell High School. Following high school Gene enlisted in the United States Navy. He served aboard both the U.S.S. Rigel (AF-58) and the U.S.S. Ranger (CV-61), attaining the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. Gene received the Good Conduct Medal before transferring to United States Navy Reserves. Upon his Honorable discharge Gene moved to Southern California.
While working for Southern California Edison and raising his family Gene continued his education at California State University at Fullerton, where he received a Degree in Business and Finance. Gene started his career at Southern California Edison Corporation as a Substation Apprentice, progressed through First Operator and ended his career as a Test Technician A with his partner Bill Barcus, for whom he had great regard; they made a great team. Gene retired from Southern California Edison after 47 years.
Throughout his years at Edison Gene was a Union Steward for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 47. Later in life his experience there transferred to the Wine and Spirits Local 1776 as a Union Representative. Gene was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He worked as treasurer for the Erie Lions Club as well as the Erie County Republican Party
Even though Gene struggled with illness, he still designed and was the General Contractor for the home that he and his wife lived in for many years. The house was his pride and joy, he and his wife Elizabeth completing the near entirety of the woodworking and tiling themselves. He loved photography, especially portraiture and weddings. He also enjoyed working with his hands assisting with restoration in Girard’s historic Battles Farmhouse. Gene loved to fish with his sons in addition to target shooting with rifles.
In addition to his parents Eugene was preceded in death by his brother, Michael J. Sorrentino.
He will be greatly missed by his family which include his wife of fifty-seven years Elizabeth H. (Brown) Sorrentino whom he married December 12, 1964 in Long Beach, CA; sons, Sean Sorrentino (Lin) and Brian Sorrentino (Lisa Ann); sisters, Pamela Smith, Donna Straub, and Cheryl “Cherie” Sorrentino; brother, James Unger (Rose Marie); as well as many nieces and nephews.
