Elwood "Red" E Zimmerman, 82, of Lake City, died Sunday, October 24, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on April 7, 1939 in Fairhope, PA (Somerset County), a son of the late Charles G. and Blanche S. (Lape) Zimmerman.
Moving to Erie in 1956, Red began work at a young age, firstly as a dump truck driver for a distant cousin, Adam Nicolson. At age 17, in 1957, he enlisted in the United States Army serving with the 112th Infantry Regiment. Stationed in both Fort Knox Kentucky and Fort A. P. Hill in Virginia. He was honorably discharged in 1964.
Red was a jack all of trades through life, working in various areas. Most notable, Red owned and operated the Girard Keystone Garage gas station. In addition to this, he also worked as a Lake City Policeman and as a machinist later retiring from Girard Township in 2001. He had cherished memories of a 25th wedding anniversary vacation to Hawaii, with his late wife Marie. Following retirement he moved to Florida, living there for nearly twenty years.
Red was a life time member of the Siebenbuerger Club. Red was a very active man. He enjoyed throwing horseshoes and playing bingo in his later years. Red was also a member of American Vets Post #1992, FL, as well as a member of the Girard American Legion Post #494, Eustis, FL American Legion Post #0400. Red was also a member of the V.F.W. Post #4965 in West Springfield and the Lake Erie Lodge #347 F&A.M.
In addition to his parents, Red was preceded in death by his wife of thirty years, Marie Zimmerman (Facchanio); his second spouse, Evelyn Zimmerman (Fox) and his third spouse, Carol Zimmerman (Miller); a sister, Beaulah Yusko; and a granddaughter, Amanda Beam in infancy.
He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Diane Beam (Scott); a son, David Zimmerman (Tammie); three sisters, Etta Zimmerman, Arlene Hauger and Betty Schwab (John); three grandchildren, Matthew Beam (Theresa), Brittany Grettler (Patrick) and Courtney Stirling (Brian); seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lake Erie Lodge #347 F& AM, 8 Penn Avenue, Girard, PA 16417.
Friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service on Monday, November 1, 2021 at St. John's Cemetery, Girard at 10 A.M. with full military honors.
