Donald H. Shaffer, 81, died at home, unexpectedly on Thursday, January 20, 2022
He was born November 22, 1940, a son to the late Howard and Luella (Vorse) Shaffer.
Donald attended Rice Avenue Union High School before beginning work on I90 with S.J. Groves & Sons Company. In January of 1961 He enlisted into the United States Army. He was stationed at Schofield barracks with A Company, 1st Battalion 35th Infantry Division and deployed to Southeast Asia. Donald attained the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Sharpshooter badge Expert, 106 MM, Rifle M-1 Garand and M-4, and 81 mm Mortar.
Upon his Honorable Discharge Donald returned home to the Erie area. He then started his career at Parker White Metal Company now PHB Inc.. Don worked as a supervisor where his organizational skills and mechanical knowledge served him well. He was known as a dependable source for a job well done until his retirement following forty years.
Donald never strayed from starting something new, he followed through with a dream to build his own home with little knowledge of construction. He was an outdoors man that enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. He had a gift of artistic talent that spread from drawing to harmonizing with family around the tune of a guitar. Donald’s circle of friends and family became close as he aged, but in his reservations, his love and kindness to them had shown volumes. Donald was a member of the Girard American Legion Post #494 as well as the Edinboro Mckean VFW Post #740.
In addition to his parents Donald was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Wagner; a granddaughter in infancy, Clare Walker-Shaffer; brothers-in-laws, Leroy Lawrence, Gerald “Jerry” Cook, Kenneth Cook; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Shaffer.
He will be greatly missed by his family which include his wife, Carole (Cook) Shaffer of over fifty years whom he married July 1, 1967; a son, Wade Shaffer (Sonya Walker); brothers, David Shaffer, John Shaffer, Larry Shaffer (Elaine); a sister, Roberta Lawrence; brother-in-laws, Bill Wagner, Lyell Cook (Nancy), Charles Cook; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Cook; as well as many nieces and nephews.
