Donald Crosby Obituary

Donald Carl Crosby, 79, of Cranesville, died on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at UPMC Hamot. 

He was on born December 6, 1943, a son to the late Lyle and Florence (Woodworth) Crosby. 

Carl grew up in Cranesville, graduating from Albion Area High School in 1962. Following high school he enlisted into the United States Navy. During his time in the Navy, Carl was stationed at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River where he was assigned to the "Golden Pelicans" Patrol Squadron Forty Four. As a member of the squadron, he flew on the P-3 Orion aircraft on surveying missions over the seas to locate submarines. Attaining the rank of Petty Officer Third Class and being awarded the Good Conduct medal.  Following his dedicated service, Carl received an Honorable Discharge in 1964 and returned home to the Erie area.

Carl began his career by working at Morelite Inc., followed by a brief stint at Parker White Metal. Eventually, he landed a position as a brake man at the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad. Carl showed dedication and commitment to his work, which earned him a long tenure with the company. After many years, Carl decided to transfer his skills to the Albion State Correctional Institution. Initially, he served as a Correctional Officer before being promoted to the position of Janitorial Foreman, where he was responsible for overseeing multiple inmates in the facilities cleaning crew. Carl was known to treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position. 

Carl was a family man who always put his loved ones first. He had a simple lifestyle and preferred spending time at home. He shared his passion for fishing with his sons and often took them to local creeks for a day of bonding and fun. Aside from fishing, Carl also enjoyed socializing with friends at the Cranesville Fire Department during events such as fish frys and poker games. He was a hands-on person who loved making improvements to his camp in Warren and spending time there with his family. Hunting was another activity that Carl and his family enjoyed, often exploring the nearby areas to hunt for game. Carl was a life time member of the Albion VFW Post #2341.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Crawford; brother, Gerald Crosby. 

He will be greatly missed by his family which include his wife, Cheryl (Hetz) Crosby whom he married on October 2, 1965; sons, Brian and Todd Crosby; grandchildren, Lisa Crosby and Scott Crosby;great-grandchildren, Rylin Crosby and Loyol Crosby.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
