SPC John Daniel Cook, 24, active duty U.S. Army, of Ft. Bragg, NC, died suddenly at his family’s home in Cranesville on Monday, April 16, 2018 of natural causes.
He was born March 12, 1994 in Erie, a son of Kevin M. and Laura (Gourley) Cook of Cranesville.
John graduated as a student of the Cook family home school in 2012. While in high school he was outstanding in basketball and played baseball for the Northwestern High School Wildcats. He then attended and graduated from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following his education, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and received his jump wings at Fort Benning, Ga. serving with 1st Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Alpha Company. Recently he was selected to pursue Army Special Forces-Psychological Operations at Ft. Bragg, NC.
John loved sports and when at home on leave, he really loved being with his family, sharing food and memories. He was the family comic and everyone enjoyed his presence. John’s goal in life was to serve his God and his country.
He was preceded in death by his Paternal Grandfather, Joseph C. Cook.
John will be greatly missed by his family, which in addition to his parents include his sisters, Sarah E. (Cook) Dobson (James), Abigail J. Cook, Anna L. Cook, Elisabeth M. Cook; his brothers, Caleb M. Cook, Gabriel P. Cook and Matthew J. Cook (Brianna); his Maternal Grandparents, Jay and Susanne Gourley; his Paternal Grandmother, Mary Jane Cook; a niece, Giavanna Cook and a nephew, Michael Cook, also several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Edder Funeral Home Inc., 309 Main St., East, Girard and are invited to attend services at WLD Ranch, 7351 Woolsey Road, Girard on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Malcolm Beall and Pastor Michael Bryant officiating.
Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
