Ronald Dean Mayer, 69 of Albion, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at UPMC Hamot following an extended illness. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, October 4, 1949, a son of the late Norman O. and Dorothy (Newman) Mayer. Ron was raised and educated in Queens, NY, moving to Albion, PA, in 1975.
Ron worked as a Teamster in New York and in Erie, PA; then he spent 13 years at AM/PM Mini-Mart before becoming the owner/manager at Mayer's NW Market. Ron was truly proud of his store and its positive impact on the Albion community.
"Dean" as he was known in the bowling circle rolled his first perfect game at age 16 at Triangle Lanes, Queens, NY. A lefty in an era when "right was right," Dean found southpaws had the advantage. As avid bowlers Dean and Marge spent numerous nights at the lanes. Dean rolled more than 20 "300" games and 7 "800" series. He served as President of Erie District Bowling Association (EDBA) Board of Directors and was inducted into the EDBA Hall of Fame in 1995. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ethelann Mayer. He will be greatly missed by his family, which include his wife, Margaret "Marge" (Lisowsky) Mayer, whom he married March 30, 1969 in Elmhurst, NY; three daughters, Jen Edwards (Mike), Debbie Brock (John), Michelle Gresh (Al); a son, Dean J. Mayer (Shelley); a sister, Diane Mayer; a brother, Sam Mayer (Bill); his mother-in-law, Mary C. Prizzi; his grandchildren. Nathan Edwards, Julia Brock, Jenna Brock, Reese McDonald and Lucas Gresh, and his nephew, Robert Mayer. Services will be held privately by the family.
