Marvin E. Waxham Sr., 86, of Lake City, died Saturday, February 23, 2019 at St. Vincent Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Saturday, November 19, 1932 in Fairview, a son of the late Oliver J. and Elizabeth (Loffi) Waxham.
Marv attended Rice Avenue Union High School in Girard and as a young man went to work at McCarty’s Store in Lake City. He was inducted into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and served with the 309th Field Hospital. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he returned home and continued work at McCarty’s Store, which he purchased in 1973. The store then became known as “Waxham’s Sundries”, which he and his wife Barbara operated for many years, retiring in 2005.
Marv was a well known man throughout the fire service and was a member of the Lake City Fire Company since the age of 16. He was recently recognized by the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania and community for his 70 years of continuous service to the organization and surrounding communities. Marv was Past Chief there from 1962 to 1977 and assisted in every operation and function of the Lake City Fire Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean (Lucas) Waxham, whom he married December 2, 1961 in Girard also a sister in law, Winifred Waxham and “grand dog”, Parker Waxham.
Marv will be greatly missed by his family, which include a son, Marvin E. Waxham Jr. (Jennifer) of Lake City; two daughters, Elizabeth “Buffy” Jobczynski (Jeff) of Bluffton, S.C., Anne Marie Sauer of Erie; two brothers, Owen O. Waxham of Lake City, Melvin N. Waxham (Jeannette) of Somerset, PA; his two grandchildren, Remle A. Sauer and Lucas G. Sauer; a close friend and co-worker Lori Rice, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Girard Alliance Church, 229 Rice Ave., Girard and are invited to attend Services there on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Harry Johns, Erie Fire Department, Chaplin officiating.
Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery with Military and Firefighters honors.
