Welcome to the memorial page for

Dorothy E. (Daub) McCall

December 30, 2017

Dorothy E. (Daub) McCall:

Her’s was the gift of long life. Of good health, clear thoughts, warm friendships, adoring family. Dorothy Emma Daub McCall, first born child of parents Raymond and Margaret Mayerhoefer Daub was born on October 23, 1919 in Erie, Pennsylvania. Her life ended on December 30, during the historic snowfall of 2017, with memories of a wonderful family Christmas dancing in her head.
Dorothy was raised and educated in Erie at St. Johns Grade School and East High. In her late teens she met the love of her life, Ralph Emerson McCall. They were married for 49 years when he died in 1986 after raising their four children in North Girard, later renamed Lake City. PA.  Dorothy was an industrious young wife and mother, sewing and gardening for her family, and helping when needed by tying grapes and packing asparagus on the Grimshaw farm owned by Howard and Betty, her brother and sister-in-laws. She also worked at Marx Toy factory in Girard to supplement her family’s income. She later became a Licensed Practical Nurse and exercise therapist at Pleasant Ridge Manor in Girard. After her children married and started families of their own, she often became their much appreciated loving babysitter. Later in life she enjoyed her neighborhood card clubs, and bus trips with her sister and friends. For many years she had season’s passes and loved attending performances at The Erie Playhouse. In the last two years she thoroughly enjoyed the new friendships she made while living at Manchester Commons in Fairview, as well as the loving care given her by Jacque, Kathy, Laura, Susanne, Michelle, Tammy and all who loved to do the Monkey Dance with her. A special friend was Ryan, the college student who played piano for the residents each Sunday following lunch. Dot and Ryan forged a mutual admiration for one another. Just days before her passing, Ryan accompanied Dot and her visiting granddaughter Karen, husband Jim, and grandson Scott and wife Amy, and their families as they sang Christmas carols together in the lobby of the Commons. Later that day Grandma Dot enjoyed dinner at the home of Hagan and Kelly, where the entire Garth Hetz family gathered to celebrate all being together for the first time in ages. The group pictures with Dot seated front and center will be treasured always.
Left to cherish memories of their mother are her son, Allen E. McCall and his wife Barbara of Girard; daughters, Margaret (Peggy) Hetz and her husband Garth of Fairview; Diane Gottschling of Beaufort S.C.; and Jill Connelly and her husband Tom of Edinboro.
Eleven grandchildren who loved and laughed with their Gramma Dot are: Karen (Jim) Repas, Scott (Amy) McCall, Heidi (Rick) Zomnir, Hans (Amy) Hetz, Hagan (Kelly) Hetz, Jeff, Brian (Shannon) and Chris Nagel, and Flynn and Clint Connelly. Eighteen great-grandchildren felt blessed to know their great gramma Dot: Mick and Chloe Zomnir, Tyler and Trevor Thompson, Katie and Holly Repas, Nason and Camryn McCall, Hali, Heath, Hyatt, Hollen, Harper and Henrik Hetz, Chris, Carli, Lexi and Justin Nagel.
Surviving Dorothy are her sister, Shirley Dash and her daughters; sisters-in-law Betty Grimshaw and Janet Ohmer and their families, and her brother-in-law Wallace McCall and his wife Helen, and sister-in-law Dawn McCall, who live in Arizona.
Preceding her in death were Dot’s sister, Charlotte (Bertie) Krupinski; brother, Raymond Daub, a son in law Doug Gottschling and great grandson Hayden Sawyer Hetz.
