Betty Bell Obituary

Betty (Lou) Bell, of Parkside at Westminster, formerly of Girard and Lake City, passed away on April 8, 2024.

Betty was a lifelong resident of the area, graduating from Girard High School, Behrend Center, and also had a nursing degree from St. Vincent in earlier years. She retired in 2000 after 28 years as Secretary/Treasurer of Girard Township. During her 28 years at Girard Township, she was given five beautiful plaques to honor her dedication and faithful service.

A longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Girard where she was an usher, a member of the Fellowship Committee, Chairman of the Prayer Chain and volunteered when needed. A member of the Girard American Legion Post #494, serving as Sergeant of Arms for the Ladies Auxiliary and was recently awarded a framed certificate of outstanding contributor to the accomplishment of the programs of the American Legion Auxiliary. She served there faithfully for 22 years and was awarded a lifetime membership. She was also a member of the VFW #4965 Ladies Auxiliary, a volunteer for the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society, and a volunteer for the Highmark PALS (People Able to Lend Support) Program. In earlier years, she was a Den Mother, a former member of the Erie County Secretaries Assoc., PA Government Secretaries Assoc., PA State Association of Township Officials, and a representative for the Township on the Chamber of Commerce. As Sec./Treas. of Girard Township, where she helped obtain grant funding and private funding for the first traffic light in Girard Township at the Imperial Point Plaza. Betty turned the switch, putting the light in operation on Feb. 14, 1990, and also helped get funding to develop Imperial Point Plaza and Elk Creek Access.

Betty took great pride in her family and enjoyed her friends. She enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens, dancing, boating, long walks at the lake and loved to read true novels and mystery books.

She was preceded in death by a son, Randi Joe Bell, her father and mother, Anthony (Jack) and Hazel (Platz) Veiger; the father of her children, William Bell; a brother, Edward (Bobby) Veiger; a sister, Ginny Smith, and her husband, William Smith.

She is survived by a son, Timothi J. Bell and his wife, Connie, of CA, daughters Teri Linn Fitzgerald of CA and Penni Sue Louvier of Erie, PA, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, all of whom she dearly loved and many good friends. Also, a very good friend, who was like a grandchild to her, Riley Parise.

Friends may call Monday, April 15, 2024, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Edder Funeral Home Inc., 309 Main Street E, Girard. A Funeral Service will be held the following day, Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. with burial at Girard Cemetery after the service.
