George M. Campbell II

December 24, 1949 ~ January 18, 2018 (age 68) 68 Years Old

George M. Campbell, II, sixty-eight, of Girard, died Thursday January 18, 2018 at UPMC Hamot following a brief illness.
To his many friends, George was known as “the Chuckster.” He was born on December 24, 1949 in Erie, the eldest son of the late George M. and Nellie Irene (McIntyre) Campbell. During his childhood, George and his brothers spent many Saturdays at the auto body shop his father co-owned, C&A Collision at 7th and Holland Streets in Erie. In 1968, the love of automobiles he inherited from his father set the path of his life’s career. He graduated from Fairview High School and began his auto body repair apprenticeship with Al Ferraro Ford in Girard. His avocation was drag racing, which he avidly pursued at Thompson Raceway. There, his skillful driving of his gloss black 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone won him many trophies and awards. Over time, George’s talent as an auto body finish technician gained him a fine reputation around the Erie area.  In 1984, Erie Insurance Group offered him a position as Claims Adjustor. Eventually he rose to the position of Auditor and then Material Damage Supervisor. George retired from Erie Insurance in 2015, with thirty years of service. In middle age, he became an enthusiastic golfer, another love he shared with his father. The two men played many tournaments together through the Erie Claims-men’s Association. He enjoyed woodworking in his garage and he doted on his Labs, Skeller, Zak and  Zoe. He was devoted to his wife Sandra, and was a loving Papa to his grandchildren, Savannah and Henry.
He  will be greatly missed by his family, which include his loving wife of twenty years, Sandra (Bennett) Campbell, whom he married on February 14, 1997, his son, Michael Hooker (Melanie); grandchildren Savannah and Henry Hooker; a sister, Sandra (Campbell) Orban (Dr. Robert Orban, Jr.) of Queensbury, NY; two brothers, the Rev. Dr. Norman Campbell (Brenda) of Indianapolis, IN and Kevin Campbell (Angela) of Elkhart, IN. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, and in laws.
Friends may call on Friday (TODAY) from 5 to 8 pm at Edder Funeral Home, Inc., 309 Main St. East, Girard and again there on Saturday from 10a.m. to the time of the service at 11 a.m. George’s brother, the Rev. Dr. Norman Campbell will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN. 38105 Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery.
